Why Don't My Keys Work?
Have you noticed that the keys for your home or your office are not working like they used to? Do you need to jiggle the key or lift the key to get it to turn? Does the lock seem stiff or turn hard? It may be time for a little maintenance on your locks.
Just like our vehicles, locks and keys will wear out over time. You have a metal key sliding into a metal hole with metal pins inside and after a while the key and the pins will wear down making it difficult (and maybe even impossible) to turn the lock. So what should you do to get your lock working again?
Most of the time simply rekeying your lock and cutting a new key will take care of the problem. A trained and certified locksmith can decode your current key, make you a new key that is cut to the factory specs and then rekey your lock, replacing the worn out pins in the cylinder. Once the lock is reinstalled it will work like new and your new key will work in the same locks as your old key.
A rekey will solve the problem the majority of time but on occasion you may also need to lubricate the lock or even replace the lock. Locks that have been exposed to harsh weather can be hard to turn because of corrosion or lack of use. Locksmiths use lubricants specifically designed for locks that will get it moving again without attracting more dirt that will cause more problems. If the lock is still difficult to turn, or is even broken, it will need to be replaced. Your locksmith can show you several options to replace your old lock and can even key the new lock to match the rest of the locks on your home or business!
If you are having issues with any of your locks, give us a call to schedule a time to talk about your options and to get your locks working properly again.
